Download Vs. Sonisphere

As Download reveals its headliners, there’s heady debate amongst festival goers whether the UK’s biggest rock weekend is going to be a disappointment. With AC/DC, Rage Against The Machine and Aerosmith billed for the top slots, some might wonder where the criticism is coming from. Knebworth’s Sonisphere is enticing patrons with Iron Maiden, Rammstein and Motley Crue. It’s even stevens on that front, depending where your musical tastes lie.

AC/DC haven’t played a UK festival in years.
Rage Against The Machine will surely be a huge pull but the thought of 50,000 teenagers screaming ‘Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me’, shaking their sweaty mops of hair into their beer might put off us more mature music lovers.
Aerosmith have the potential to put on an incredible show but will Steven Tyler make it through the performance?

Iron Maiden are playing plenty of other festivals this summer.
Rammstein are known for their legendary performances with stunning pyrotechnics but hasn’t EVERYONE seen them now?
Motley Crue are one of this writer’s favourite bands but last year’s performance at Download Festival left a lot to be desired with little chubby Vince Neil and frail Mick Mars leaving the stage with Nikki Sixx for a bizarre interlude of Tommy Lee shouting “Dude, this is awesome!!” at the crowd for ten minutes.

But what about the rest of line ups? Download will see San Diego stalwarts Stone Temple Pilots back in the gigging game after spending time working on their 6th studio album. Also on the billing is the hotly-anticipated Them Crooked Vultures – Dave Grohl’s latest supergroup – as well as Deftones, Motorhead and Wolfmother. Sonisphere on the other hand has the well-toured Placebo (this writer has seen them six times without meaning to) and music’s answer to wetting the bed: Papa Roach. Oh, and Fear Factory. Great.

See you at Download!
