INTERVIEW: Julian Dorio from The Whigs

RHV’s MATTHEW ORD interviewed The Whigs’ Julian Dorio…

Hey guys. Thanks for doing the interview – much appreciated. So you’ve recently released your new album ‘In The Dark’. In what ways does it differ to past albums?

First off, it’s our first release overseas so we’re very excited to be coming to the UK and Europe to support it. This album started with a lot of drum and bass lines to create a foundation for the vocals and guitar. We always like to try new things and we had fun in the process.

Do you have a favorite track on the album?

It’s always changing but I’d say my favorite track right now is ‘Naked’.

Do you feel you’ve taken a step forward as a band?
Definitely. We’re always pushing ourselves to move forward. We never want to feel stagnant in our creativity.

You toured with Kings of Leon last year whilst you were making the album. Did they have any influence at all on how you made the record? And did playing such huge arenas have any effect on you?
Touring with KOL and getting to know them definitely has an influence on us. It’s inevitable that performing beside such a great band in such amazing venues affects our ideas, not just the songs, but how we perform live and connect with an audience.

How easy was it to find material to write about?
We tend to write a lot when making an album. Finding material isn’t difficult but it takes a lot of work to get to the point where we have more than enough and start picking out what’s best.

Do you feel this is the best album you’ve made to date? And if so, why?
There is no substitute for experience so we’re always learning from our past and pushing to better ourselves. We feel like this is our best album to date but we’ve now started talking and discussing what we’ll do next. The creative process never stops and we’re never satisfied.

What can we expect from your upcoming UK tour?
We’re very excited to be coming back to the UK with our hometown friends Dead Confederate. We’re proud to be from the same music community and bring more new Athens music to the UK. You can expect a high energy rock n roll show!

Can we expect to see you in the UK for any festivals this summer?
Yes, we’re hoping to be back this summer!

You’ve played shows in both the US and Europe. Where do you prefer playing, if any, and why?
We love the States but we’ve toured here a lot. Going to Europe is new to us and we appreciate the energy the fans put back in to the show. It helps make each show unique.

How soon do you think you’ll start work on your next record?
We’ll go back to Athens after the UK tour and start working on the next album.
