INTERVIEW: A Jigsaw

1. Tell us who you are and where you’re from.: Our band is called “a Jigsaw” because of a song by the Belgium band dEUS. We’re three multi-instrumentalist musicians: Joao Rui, Susana Ribeiro and Jorri and we hail from Coimbra, Portugal.

2. Describe your music.: It’s hard to describe the music. It’s better to describe through sound waves. We guess it’s folk with blues roots, from an indie point of view.

3. Tell us how the band formed in three sentences.: Jorri and João Rui met back in 1999 and began the band out of the need of creating music. We recorded “From Underskin” Ep in 2004 and “Letters from the Boatman” LP in 2007. Susana Ribeiro was a guest in that last album and joined the band afterwards.

4. What did you do before you were in a band?: Back at the time we formed the band, everyone was taking their college degree.

5. List the first CDs/records each of you bought.: João Rui: Elvis Presley – Greatest hits, The Sex Pistols – Nevermind the Bollocks, GNR – Valsa dos Detectives.
Susana Ribeiro: Bauhaus – The Sky’s Gone Out, Throwing Muses – The Real Ramona, The Breeders – Pod.
Jorri: Pixies – Doolittle, Blur – Parklife, Dire Straits – Brothers in Arms.

6. What’s the band up to over the next few months?: The next two months the band will be touring heavily throughout Europe: Uk, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Belgium, etc. And towards the end of the year will begin working on the new album.

7. Best item of fan mail you’ve ever received?: A beautiful painting of the band featuring our concept of our latest album “Like The Wolf” by a painter named Luis Belo.

8. What music do you have on repeat in the tourbus? : The new Black Keys album “Brothers”, Fred Eaglesmith’s Tinderbox, a couple of Tom waits, some new stuff and some old.

9. What gear do you use?: Piano, Hammond, acoustic guitars and archtops, resonator guitar, harmonium, glockenspiel, melodica, violin, xylophones, drums, percussions, upright bass, banjo, ukulele, mandolin, lap steel, harmonicas and some more.

10. What’s your best on-tour story?: There are so many… on of those was in Switzerland when our car was stopped by the police in the middle of the highway and they forgave us a heavy fine after we showed them our photo in a magazine we had in the car and realizing that we were not lying about being there on tour and having played there in that same day. We were so happy… 15 days later we received a fine for speeding there. About an hour after the Swiss incident, we were stopped by the police in Germany and two officers literally smelt our wallets, guitar cases and pretty much everything we had on to search for drugs. It felt as though as if the law was a groupie of ours.

11. What do you demand on your rider?: There are so many… on of those was in Switzerland when our car was stopped by the police in the middle of the highway and they forgave us a heavy fine after we showed them our photo in a magazine we had in the car and realizing that we were not lying about being there on tour and having played there in that same day.
