INTERVIEW: Akarusa Yami

1. Tell us who you are and where you’re from.: Tom B (Vocals) – We are Akarusa Yami, and we’re from Nottinghamshire.

2. Describe your music.: Tom B – I’d describe the bands overall sound as Metal with hints of Industrial and progressive music.

TK (Guitars) – Can’t disagree with that but I’d add a bit of death metal into the mix as well.

3. Tell us how the band formed in three sentences.: Tom B – TK had been working on material back in 2009 that would make up ‘Ouroborous’ (Debut album, released September 12th). He approached me with the material in September 2010 and here we are.

4. What did you do before you were in a band?: Tom B – I’ve been working in the music industry in different ways for years. I’ve been a promoter, a journalist, a radio host; a number of things. I currently work as a Publicist and a Writer away from the band.

TK – I’ve been teaching guitar and studying music for the last few years now.

5. List the first CDs/records each of you bought.: Tom B – I’m going to say ‘Hybrid Theory’ by Linkin Park. After that it was ‘Alive, Or Just Breathing’ by Killswitch Engage and ‘God Hates Us All’ by Slayer.

TK – That was at some point in the mid-nineties…I can’t think that far back but it was probably something shit! *laughs*

6. What’s the band up to over the next few months?: Tom B – We’re getting ready to launch the album in September, prep the live line up and we’ve also got our eyes on a few festivals that we’d like to do.

7. Best item of fan mail you’ve ever received?: Tom B – Shortly after posting our new single ‘Third Eye, Wide Open’ I got an e-mail from a chap called Robert who plays in a Welsh band called More Ways Than One. Please check them out, they’re fantastic.

He told me that he really liked my voice and offered me a slot on his next album. We’re just recording the vocals for it now. It’s a bit different to AY, more traditional death metal, but it sounds cool. The song’s going to be called ‘Life, The Venomous Way.’

8. What music do you have on repeat in the tourbus? : Tom B – When we find out, we’ll let you know! *laughs*

9. What gear do you use?: Tom B – I’ve been using the same Audio Technica mic now for about 6 years, the thing is solid as a rock. I got one after reading how good they were in a Stampin’ Ground interview. Best mic I’ve ever used.

TK – Mainly use various Ibanez guitars, EMG pickups, Boss Effects, Line 6 & Marshall Amp’s, and Digitech Whammy Pedal: man I’m addicted to that thing!

10. What’s your best on-tour story?: Tom B – *Laughs* I don’t really have any! The only one I can think of involves a disastrous trip to Prague a few years ago. I nearly died on about three or four occasions over a five day period. It was quite scary.

TK – Various things, but one that springs to mind was while I was in an old band with Damian Lee (Guitars) we had a gig down in London. After the show we went to an all-you-can-eat buffet, and our manager at the time said that he wouldn’t be able to ride in the van with us until he’d eaten at least 7 full plates of Chinese food: he couldn’t move for about half an hour afterwards. *laughs*

11. What do you demand on your rider?: Tom B – I think if I were to ask for anything it’d be fresh coffee, towels and some fruit. Not much.

TK – Coffee, fruit juice and takeout most likely; nice and easy!

12. What’s your website?:
