INTERVIEW: Alan Starck

1. Tell us who you are and where you’re from.: As you might have guessed, I’m Alan Starck. I live in delightful Richmond on the London/Surrey borders.

2. Describe your music.: My description would change from day to day. I don’t really aspire to fit a specific musical genre and really just lay down the sounds and tunes that come to me as I tinker in the studio. I guess in broad terms you could call my music ambient electronica with a few quirky tunes and beats here and there. My new stuff I am developing at the moment is a little more upbeat. At the end of the day I do believe that people just make music that is conglomeration of what they have listened to over the years.

3. Tell us how the band formed in three sentences.: Classically trained son of an avid acid-house listening father. Developed a hunger for various artistic pursuits once I was established in my rather scientific life. Put more energy and devotion into my music production after Ominim records showed interest and gave me great support

4. What did you do before you were in a band?: Years of hard graft training and then working as a doctor. I rapidly began to realise in recent years that I am more and more interested in the arts.

5. List the first CDs/records each of you bought.: The first I can really remember was buying this ‘starwars’ soundtrack album. It wasn’t the real thing but some hilariously tasteless electronic rip-off with very cheesy electro beats (maybe more of an influence than I’d like to think). But as a young kid I loved it. I quickly grew a serious interest in music at a tender age and ploughed through lots of classical, jazz and electronica works. My first most memorable electonica cd was probably 808states ex:el, a masterpiece I still enjoy to this day.

6. What’s the band up to over the next few months?: I’ve just released a new EP and another one is waiting for release in the very near future. I also have a build up of new work waiting in the wings as I am a speedy producer. I am also making my first video to go with one of my recent tracks which will be fun and quite interesting to pull off.

7. Best item of fan mail you’ve ever received?: Even the most simple of appreciation messages I have received have made my day. The fact that there is someone on the other side of the planet listening to one of my tracks makes me insanely happy.

8. What music do you have on repeat in the tourbus? : When I’m turning the wheel in my mouldy VW I like to put on a mix tape of Miles Davis, Stravinsky, Prince, and a peppering of old school electronica.

9. What gear do you use?: A home studio setup with sounds coming from a complete mishmash of software, guitars, 50p drums from a boot sale, children, balloons, polyester shirts and various parts of my body.

10. What’s your best on-tour story?: I’m hoping to have one of these in the next year

11. What do you demand on your rider?: I don’t have one. But if I did, I would insist on no mould, and no ABBA.

12. What’s your website?:
