INTERVIEW: Black Soul Strangers

RHV: Tell us who you are and where you're from?.
My name is Barry Gorey from the band Black Soul Strangers. I am from Dublin, Ireland.

RHV: Describe your music.
We don't really like to mark our music into a certain genre. It has a lot of synthesisers and vocal harmonies that would be considered 'pop'. But we do love our big heavy guitars.

RHV: Tell us how the band formed in three sentences.
Band formed with me and Brendan moving to an old school house on the north east coast of Ireland. Went into record our album in Dublin with our friend, James (bass), and producer Tom Mc Fall (Stars, Bloc Party, REM). We moved to London in January 2009 with James, recruited Philip as an additional synth and guitar player, and began playing lots of live shows.

RHV: What did you do before you were in a band?
I spent most days after school up in my bedroom playing a guitar, and learning songs. It was either that or go out and get into trouble.

RHV: List the first CDs/records each of you bought.
Barry - Shakin Stevens. Merry Christmas Everyone.
Brendan -Sultans of Ping
James - Bruce Springstein. Born in the USA
Philip - Michael Jackson. Bad

RHV: What's the band up to over the next few months?
We have our new single 'The Haunting' out on March 15th, which we have just finished making a video for last weekend. My girlfriend Marina produced and directed it, while Brendan's girlfriend, Avril, was our leading actress. We've got a talented family around us. Its something we are very concious of.

RHV: Best item of fan mail you've ever received?
We played a show last Saturday night in camden and a girl came up afterwards with some cans of cider for us, and then vanished. Which was very random....

RHV: What music do you have on repeat in the tourbus?
We don't have a tour bus yet. But we had The Good, The Bad, and The Queen record on last night after rehearsals. Its definitely a favourite of ours.

RHV: What gear do you use?
There is a hidden gem vintage guitar shop in dundalk, ireland. When we get some time to spend back home, we do like to drive down and have a look. A lot of our gear has come from there, some 1970's telecasters and a Korg MS20

RHV: What's your best on tour story?
We were on a return flight from dublin to london. We all had been out with some friends the night before in Galway after a gig. And feeling a little delicate and confused on the plane, Philip started making arrangements about heading out in Dublin when we landed! It took him a little while, and some strong convincing, before he realised we were on our way back to London.

RHV: What do you demand on your rider?
Some bananas and water is a good way to prepare just before a show.

RHV: What's your website?
