INTERVIEW: Danny & The Champions Of The World

RHV: Tell us who you are and where you're from?.
We’re Danny & The Champions Of The World and we’re from London and Oxford mostly via everywhere and nowhere. We all used to be or are still in different bands including Grand Drive, Goldrush, Indigo Moss, Trevor Moss and Hannah Lou, Ralph Band and Dusty and the Dreaming Spires.

RHV: Describe your music.
It’s very honest. It’s often quite raw and sad but we try to make it all an uplifting experience – a bit like life in general. We don’t see the point in playing unless we make a moment, attempt something special. Kick out the jams and all that.

RHV: Tell us how the band formed in three sentences.
We got together to record a tune for the Truck festival CD a few years ago and it all just kind of grew from that. We never actually had a conversation about starting a band and I don’t think we meant to but people keep asking us to play so we do - It would seem rude not to!

RHV: What did you do before you were in a band?
Knock down ginger, listening to Black Flag, drinking cheap beer – nothing much has changed really.

RHV: List the first CDs/records each of you bought.
The first records I bought were The Specials first album and Buddy Holly’s greatest hits – still up there with the best I ever bought!

RHV: What's the band up to over the next few months?
Loads of touring and festivals, writing new songs, listening to Black Flag and drinking cheap beer.

RHV: Best item of fan mail you've ever received?
A pasta collage/portrait of Hank Williams – it’s absolutely amazing, with different types of pasta creating shading and colour. We’ve had a few photos of people’s ‘champs’ tattoos which is an honour.

RHV: What music do you have on repeat in the tourbus?
A Motown hits compliation (we can debate whether ‘Tracks of My Tears’ or ‘What Becomes Of The Broken hearted’ is the best song ever for hours) and the Wanda Jackson ‘Queen of Rockabilly’ collection – both stunners.

RHV: What gear do you use?
A bunch of old guitars and amps, a load of stuff like mandolins, banjo’s, trumpet, fiddle, drums – things that sound good. We all really love to sing – singing together with your friends is like body surfing – you feel an immense and awesome natural power take hold of you and you can’t fight it.

RHV: What's your best on tour story?
Crikey, they’re all completely unrepeatable! What goes on tour stays on tour – you should know that! Of the ones I’m able to repeat it’d probably have to be the time when Ed (bassist in Grand Drive) accidently kicked a beer bottle off a balcony in Texas and it hit a cowboy on the head - very funny and quite scary!

RHV: What do you demand on your rider?
Lots of cider and a CDR compiled of their top ten best songs ever. We’re obsessed by what people think is the greatest song ever – could it be ‘Stand By Me’? I think it might well be.

RHV: What's your website?
