INTERVIEW: Firefalldown

1. Tell us who you are and where you’re from.: Jon- vocalist, guitarist, song writer, from Philippines
Joel – bassist, backing vox, from Philippines
Andrew – drummer, backing vox, from South Africa

2. Describe your music.: Mix of skate punk, harcdore, motown, funk

3. Tell us how the band formed in three sentences.: We met playing music for a local church. Found out that we were all extremely passionate about the same vision… and that that vision was enough to hold us together in spite of creative and stylistic differences. Spent time praying together and discerning whether or not this was really what we were being led to do… and when we each got confirmation, it was all systems go.

4. What did you do before you were in a band?: Joel – full time ICU nurse
Andrew – financial management
Jon – studied business

5. List the first CDs/records each of you bought.: Jon – Michael Jackson B.A.D.
Joel – Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins
Andrew – Queen Greatest Hits

6. What’s the band up to over the next few months?: Wrapping up the debut album. It’s currently being mixed and should be done in a few weeks. Not releasing it til next year though. Also planning for the next single/ music video… we’ll probably fly over to Manila to do that sometime early next year. Then there’s the odd show here and there… we’re playing Gloucester Guildhall with Verra Cruz on October 24… and we’re doing some fresher’s fairs as well.. Imperial College, possibly queen mary and London Met.

7. Best item of fan mail you’ve ever received?: Can’t think of a specific one, but it’s always great when kids tell us we’ve inspired them somehow… especially kids in bands that are just starting out. And we get a lot of “You’re awesome… even if you sing about Jesus” kinda stuff, too.

8. What music do you have on repeat in the tourbus? : Andrew has doesn’t like the volume up in the car when we’re driving. I listen to music using my headphones when we’re on the road. I’m currently going through another Dave Matthews phase, though been listening a lot to August Burns Red and Closure in Moscow too.
Music in Andrews USB is mostly 90s metal: Death, Living Sacrifice, Extol… and a bunch of Christian rock stuff like Swithfoot and Tree 63
Joel’s USB is full of 80s new wave, 90s grunge. He’s been listening to a lot of Biffy Vlyro recently

9. What gear do you use?: Jon – Fender 40th anniv Strat, sd2 dual overdrive, mxr compression
Joel – Washburn Taurus T24, ibanez se300 Bass POD
Andrew – Stag cymbals, Premiere sygnia, Roland SPD-S sampler

10. What’s your best on-tour story?: While we were in the Philippines, Andrew asked Joel how to say “Thank you and God bless you” in Filipino. Joel told him to say “May pigsa ako sa puwet”, which literally means “I have a huge boil on my ass”. That was pretty hilarious. He only found out what he was actually saying when he got back to the UK. Andrew wrote a thank you card to my family signing the card that way. We still have the card somewhere.

11. What do you demand on your rider?: Demand? We’re not that famous yet. We ask very nicely.

12. What’s your website?: http://www.firefalldown.com
