Tell us who you are and where you’re from.
We’re Fly This For Me. The band is based in Guildford but our members are from all over the UK, Sean from South Wales, Tim is from Yorkshire, Hannah from Oxfordshire and George from Essex. Joe has never and will never leave Guildford.
Describe your music.
Our individual backgrounds in music gives us a huge collective pot of influences, but our love of melodic pop punk is what really makes us gel. We fuse gritty guitar riffs with poppy choruses to provide something for everyone!
Tell us how the band formed in three sentences.
Myself (Sean) and George started to write guitar parts under the name Fly This For Me a few years ago. It took a while to find the right frontman in Tim, who understood what we were doing and what it needed vocally. Joe was later rescued from the ashes of deceased hard-rock band Open the Skies and Hannah was invited to play bass for us having moved in with myself and Tim.
What did you do before you were in a band?
Tim – Surf bum
Sean – Barman
George – Barman
Joe – Capenter’s apprentice
Hannah – Waitress
List the first CDs/records each of you bought.
Tim – The Offspring – Ixnay on the Hombre
Sean – Greenday – Warning
George – Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication
Hannah – S club 7 – Sunshine
Joe – Limp Bizkit – Chocolate Starfish
What’s the band up to over the next few months?
We’ve got our debut EP, ‘Making Shadows’ coming out in July, a few music videos to release in the run-up to it, a UK tour being booked for August and a few one of shows in the meantime.
Best item of fan mail you’ve ever received?
We don’t get much fan mail, so almost by default that has to be a cuddly panda bear which Hannah had sent to her.
What music do you have on repeat in the tourbus?
We’ve all got different taste so there’s usually plenty of fighting over the iPod. We can usually find common ground with bands like Alexisonfire, The Offspring, Sum 41, Foo Fighters, Blink 182, Story of the Year, Funeral for a Friend, Biffy Clyro
What gear do you use?
Sean (guitar) – Fender Telecaster, Fender Hotrod Deluxe amplifier, BOSS pedals.
George (guitar) – Fender Telecaster, Orange Rockerverb 50 Head, BOSS and Fulltone pedals.
Hannah (bass) – Ibanez SDGR300, Orange AD200 mk. 3 Head.
Joe (drums) – TAMA Superstar custom kit, Black Panther snare, Iron Cobra pedals, Sabian cymbals.
Tim (vocals) – Bad attitude, cavernous lungs, manly beard coupled with boyish good-looks, green microphone lead.
What’s your best on-tour story?
We did a weekender tour in Bristol at the end of last year. Tim got hold of some banned “radioactive” chili sauce at a house party and decided to put drops of it on peoples beer cans while they weren’t watching, inducing instantaneous vomiting. Hannah has a huge phobia of vomit so things got pretty distressing/hysterical. Tim breached the trust barrier with an inebriated Sean – making him absentmindedly lick the chili sauce off his fully loaded finger. Sean proceeded to lock himself in a bathroom trying to wash it out of his mouth, only to end up getting it in his eyes… there were tears. Tim got his comeuppance however; never handle ultimate chili sauce and then urinate. Savage. Chili sauce is dangerous; treat it with respect.
What do you demand on your rider?
Bottles of local river water, freshly baked croissants, warm towels, tin soldiers and five copies of ‘The Count of Monte Cristo.’ by Alexandre Dumas, for the group reading immediately before we take the stage.
