1. Tell us who you are and where you’re from.: Rich (drummer) and Bob (guitarist/singer) know each other from our home town of Workington in Cumbria. We have been emerged in the music scene there from a very young age. Where we live is very near the Lake District which is an inspirational place. With the Lake District so close, avoiding venturing into acoustic music is not always so easy! I have nothing bad to say about my birthplace. Phil (Bass) is from Burnley, however, which is a small post industrial town infamous for race riots and people on disability benefits. As a backlash to this, there has always been a small but strong rock scene amongst the young people of Burnley, most probably born out of frustration against the small town mentality of the majority of the populous.

2. Describe your music.: We have the erratic rhythms and catchy melodies of Biffy, but we are heavier. We have the power and emotion of Deftones, but we are more musically challenging. We have the heaviness and technical prowess of Tool, but we are more melodic and accessible. We have the electro/rock crossover of Pendulum, but with more variety and more guitars!

3. Tell us how the band formed in three sentences.: Bob was working for Rich’s dad. Bob met Rich and they got on quite well. Phil replied to an ad on Gumtree.

4. What did you do before you were in a band?: Before Hayabusa we were all in other bands and were students at uni. Bob and Phil actually did the same course at the same uni, but were a couple of years apart so never met each other before Hayabusa.

5. List the first CDs/records each of you bought.: Disappointingly, the first CD Rich bought was Bon Jovi – New Jersey, this is what inspired the superman tattoo on his left arm
The first album Phil ever bought was Generation Terrorists by the Manics. Over the years, the Manics have been a huge inspiration to Phil as a bass player, especially Nicky Wire’s use of eyeliner, feather boas and scissor kicks
Bobs first album was Portrait of an American Family by Marilyn Manson. Bob used to be a full on goth with long black hair, painted white face with black lipstick and nail varnish. He grew out of that quite quickly when he started listening to Pantera. He has never looked back.

6. What’s the band up to over the next few months?: At the moment we are having an extensive writing period so that we can get recording some new material for the album which should be out later in 2011. Our first single, “evil is not that laid back” will be released on 24 January 2011, so we are planning on having an epic party somewhere in Manchester for that one!

7. Best item of fan mail you’ve ever received?: Fan mail?? What’s that?? We’ve had some very complimentary things written on our Facebook wall, but no-one’s ever sent us anything through the post – that’d probably freak us out a bit!

8. What music do you have on repeat in the tourbus? : At the moment we’ve got Lissie on repeat. Usually we have something like Deftones on, but we have been known to stray into the realms of Michael Jackson’s Thriller album (much to Phil’s bemusement, although he’s a closet ABBA fan so what does he know?!), Rich always has a few folk CDs knocking about and Bobs into his dubstep. We like to keep it varied, but it always usually comes back to the heavy rock side of things.

9. What gear do you use?: Rich uses Ddrum and Highwood drums and Zildjian cymbals. Phil plays a Fender Jaguar bass through lots of pedals, mainly ElectroHarmonix, and a little but loud Ampeg amp. Bob plays an Ibanez 7-string through Boss/Line 6 pedals and a Marshall amp.
Phil would quite like to be endorsed by ElectroHarmonix please!?

10. What’s your best on-tour story?: We take it in turns to have our own personal disasters at gigs… One gig, Rich blew out the bottom skin on his snare drum, then another gig Phil broke a string in soundcheck but managed to replace it for the gig but then broke another string two songs into the set, Bob rocked so hard this one time that his strap broke half way through the set, Phil was like, “as if that ever happens!” – the next gig Phil’s strap broke as soon as we started playing!

11. What do you demand on your rider?: Rich wants two twix’s, Bob wants a Weatherspoons Beer and Burger and Phil is happy with a bottle of some kind of brown spirit.

12. What’s your website?: http://www.hayabusaband.com
