INTERVIEW: Hhymn

1.  Tell us who you are and where you’re from. We’re Hhymn and we’re from Nottingham. Hhymn began as Simon Ritchie and Ed Bannard and expanded when we recruited long-term friend Mike Wynne on drums, Amy Helliwell on glockenspiel, organ and trumpet and Will Jeffrey on bass.

2.  Describe your music. Si – It’s always a hard one to describe your own music but if pushed I’d say we write sweeping songs with enough melancholy to sink a battleship! We are trying to make interesting, honest and beautiful music to connect with people at some deep level. It’s not background music but it’s not depressing . Lyrically it can seem dark but it’s more poetic, like mining the depths to create something big, uplifting and inspiring.

3.  Tell us how the band formed in three sentences. Si – Me and Ed met through a mutual friend and started writing and recording together with the aim of making bigger better music than we had made before. We started roping in various musicians and friends who could play the instruments we wanted to use.  It just grew from there and continues to do so.

4.  What did you do before you were in a band? Si – We’ve both been in bands for as long as we can remember. Some pretty bad ones, some pretty random ones! To support being in bands we’ve done a load of shocking jobs. Ed was a gravedigger, worked in a custard factory and cleans swimming pools, I used to clean toilets and worked in a mushroom factory.

5.  List the first CDs/records each of you bought. Ed-The first records I bought were from Morrisons;  they were 7″ from the 50p bargain bin. De la Soul ‘Ring Ring Ring, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince ‘Summertime’ and Toxic 2 ‘Rave Generator’. My first album was ‘Pills Thrills and Bellyaches’. Si-My first single was a Casingle, do you remember them?! Also Poison ‘Unskinny Bop’ and Alice Cooper 7″ ‘Poison’.. really embarrassing! My first album I bought was Suede’s debut. Still listen to that one. Ed-I think we both admit to having New Kids on the Block’s first album and possibly the less said about that the better!

6.  What’s the band up to over the next few months? Ed – We have got our debut single coming out on 28th June . (A side – Land of Souls. B side – Amanita) We have a few festivals over the summer and then after that we are going to start work on our album

7.  Best item of fan mail you’ve ever received? Si – We have a Japanese lady who is very fond of the band and has sent Ed some badges with pictures of his kids faces on which was a real treat in a scary way.

8.  What music do you have on repeat in the tourbus? Ed – Beach House Teen Dream, The National new one, Laura Marling new one, MGMT and Dr. Feelgood for the summer vibes.

9.  What gear do you use? Ed – A Gibson 335 and a fender bluesman, Nord Electro and 1950’s Silvertone through an old Selmer amp and a Martin 00015, a kala tenor ukulele and a trumpet.

10. What’s your best on-tour story? Si – We had a gig in old mining village in the middle of nowhere on a Sunday night and it all got a bit Royston Vasey. and basically some crazy geezer spiked our tea with magic mushrooms and the resulting gig was perhaps the most hilarious and frightening experience of our lives

11. What do you demand on your rider? Ed – A quiet room with a window and some red wine and coffee and some cheap processed cheese stale bread and weak ale for mike our drummer

12. What’s your website? www.hhymn.com // www.myspace.com/hhymn
