INTERVIEW: Michael Lee

1. Tell us who you are and where you’re from.: My name is Michael Lee and I am from a small village called Longwick in Buckinghamshire.

2. Describe your music.: I take a huge interest in several styles of music, which leaves me with a sound that is hard to pigeon hole in one genre. I usually describe my music as Progressive Pop Rock. Think Sting mixed with Jeff Buckley and Incubus.

3. Tell us how the band formed in three sentences.: As a solo artist I perform solo as well as with a full band line up. The current line up was formed at the end of 2009 through scouting local gigs to find the top players. Luckily I have landed my self a great line up who share a similar musical vision to me.

4. What did you do before you were in a band?: Before the band I have always been writing my own songs and performing them in one way or another. This has involved playing in a few different bands. In some bands I even played different instruments including drums and bass.

5. List the first CDs/records each of you bought.: I initially got into music by listening to the CDs my dad had around the house, which included Michael Jackson plus many others. My first memory of actually purchasing my own record was when I was twelve. I bought ‘The Colour and the Shape’ by the Foo Fighters and ‘Freak Show’ by Silverchair. I still love both bands and they really helped to shape my musical roots.

6. What’s the band up to over the next few months?: Me and the band have a few busy months coming up including a tour and the release of a single called ‘Trust’. The single is taken from my album ‘Face Forward’, which is also being re-released as well.

7. Best item of fan mail you’ve ever received?: Well, in this modern world I normally don’t get things sent in the post but I do get a lot of complementary emails.

8. What music do you have on repeat in the tourbus? : On the way to gigs is normally a time when everyone fights over the stereo. Chris the bass player and Josh the keyboard player have similar tastes, which results in us listening to lots of Primus and Mr Bungle, which I don’t mind in small doses but can do my head in on a long trip.

9. What gear do you use?: I have just got a brand new Fender Strat alongside my Ibanez RG, which has been my work horse for years. My amp is the Triamp from Hughes and Kettner, which gives me a lot of tone options. For effects I use the G system from TC electronic, which controls the channel on the amp as well as providing top quality effects. For vocals I use Voicelive 2 by TC helicon, which gives effects plus harmony when it’s needed.

10. What’s your best on-tour story?: My best on tour story took place in the middle of a gig when my acoustic guitar stopped working in the middle of a solo piece I did called ‘Midnight Express’ by Nuno Bettencourt. I decided not to stop and I jumped off stage and stood amongst the crowd and kept on playing.

11. What do you demand on your rider?: I’m quite laid back in these matters. I tend not to eat before I play but I do tend to drink a lot to hydrate my voice to sing. I’m sure I might start taking advantage of the rider benefits soon though as soon my name is big enough to warrant demands (lol).

12. What’s your website?:
