INTERVIEW: My Tiger My Timing

1. Tell us who you are and where you’re from.: Anna: We are My Tiger My Timing. We’re based in New Cross in South London, but we hail from different corners of the Kingdom.

2. Describe your music.: Anna: Modern.

3. Tell us how the band formed in three sentences.: James: In a barn in a field in Andover. On an industrial estate in Bermondsey. All 5 of us crammed into a small car on the New Cross Road.

4. What did you do before you were in a band?: Gary: We’ve all always been in bands, with varying degrees of quality. I think it must be an ego thing.

5. List the first CDs/records each of you bought.: James: My first LP was the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ soundtrack. It was a Pandora’s box of early 90’s Rap, Soul & Techno, featuring such greats as Hi Tek 3, Spunkadelic & M.C. Hammer. I never understood what “I smoke the mic like weed” meant, still don’t. Formative.

Jamie: The first album I ever bought with my own money was Steam by East 17. It was their last truly brilliant record before the whole ‘E17’/Brian Harvey driving a car over himself debacle.

Seb: My first tape was ‘Oh Carolina’ by Shaggy, first CD single was ‘The Sign’ by Ace of Base… and my first album was 100% dance volume 1… by way of Nirvana Nevermind.

6. What’s the band up to over the next few months?: Anna: Our new single ‘Endless Summer’ is out on August 1st. We are playing some festivals starting with Glastonbury, this weekend. We are also finishing the recording of our first album, which should be out in the not to distant future.

7. Best item of fan mail you’ve ever received?: Anna: People don’t seem to send fan mail through the post these days, but someone on the internet did once create some beautiful artwork for the lyrics of our song ‘On My Record Player’.

8. What music do you have on repeat in the tourbus? : Anna: It depends on pre-gig or post. Pre would usually be some new bands we like, anything that sounds original or modern. Current faves: Sleigh Bells, Warpaint, The Radio Dept & Lykke Li. On the way home it goes one of two ways…either bangers (The Streets ‘Blinded By The Lights’) or drunken indie sing-a-longs (Blur’s ‘This Is A Low’), depending on how the gig has gone.

9. What gear do you use?: James: Jamie & I like to swap around instruments a lot, so we both play guitar and bass. I like Strats, he like Teles, but we both like a Precision bass. We use various pedals or “talent boxes” as my mate Grant calls them.

Jamie: I use a Fender Telecaster ’72 Custom & a Hiwatt Maxwatt G100 combo.

Seb: I use an Akai MPC1000 sampler, MicroKorg with Electro Harmonix Memory Man pedal and Roland Juno.

Gary: Drums & sticks.

Anna: I use an Audix OM7 mic and a MicroKorg.

10. What’s your best on-tour story?: James: It involves a Jamie, a glass of water and Seb, wearing nothing but a bow-tie and a smile, but that’s all I can say…

11. What do you demand on your rider?: Anna: Gary likes to wash his hair in Evian mineral water. He started the tradition at Isle of Wight festival last year. It’s the most decadent thing I’ve ever seen!

12. What’s your website?:
