Interview: The Smoking Hearts

RHV: Tell us who you are and where you're from?.
We are The Smoking Hearts, from George Street, Bedfordshire.

RHV: Describe your music.
We play fast, heavy punk rock. We've been described as hardcore and punk'n'roll, and that's fine as there's definitely elements of both in there. To me, it's just ferocious, balls to the wall punk rock, with a few tasty licks in there for good measure. It can be hard to pigeon hole The Smoking Hearts into one genre, but I see that as a good thing.

RHV: Tell us how the band formed in three sentences.
Well firstly we're all from the same area, and most of us have been friends since school. Me and Calvin (bass player) had both recently finished with previous bands, and all the bands around us were pretty much just playing the same kind of stuff as each other, and it was all getting pretty stale. So we decided to get together with some friends and just make the kind of music we wanted to hear, and the rest is history.

RHV: What did you do before you were in a band?
Dreamt about being in a band, ha! I've played in bands since I was about 14 or 15, so I guess being a kid is what I did before joining a band. Same goes for the other guys in the band too, we've all been playing since a fairly young age.

RHV: List the first CDs/records each of you bought.
Rod (vocals): NOFX - Punk In Drublic
Barker (guitar): Metallica -Black Album
Nobba (guitar): Metallica - Master Of Puppets
Calvin (bass): Metallica - Master Of Puppets
Matty (drums): Blink 182 - Enema Of The State

RHV: What's the band up to over the next few months?
Well the album 'Pride Of Nowhere' is going to be released on March 8th which we're all very excited about. And we'll be hitting the road throughout March to promote that. So yeah, check out our dates at, chances are we'll be playing at a club near you very soon. There's also some free music on the myspace site, so if you like what you hear, come down to one of the shows, check out the live show and party with us.

RHV: Best item of fan mail you've ever received?
To be honest with you, we are yet to receive any fanmail, which I guess is to be expected since we haven't even released our debut album yet!(March 8th, don't forget, available in all good record shops!)

RHV: What music do you have on repeat in the tourbus?
It's really more of a Transit van than a tourbus, but we listen to a lot of Aghast, Cancer Bats, Faith No More, Pantera, Queen, Mastodon, Propagandhi, really a mixed bag. We tend to use the 'pass the ipod around the van' method of choosing music. Very democratic.

RHV: What gear do you use?
I play a Gibson SG standard through a Marshall JCM900 head and, Nobba plays a Gibson Les Paul studio through a Marshall JCM2000 head, we both use Marshall 4x12 cabs. Calvin plays a Gibson Thunderbird bass through a Marshall VBA400 head and Marshal 8x10 cab. Matty uses a DDrum dominion pocket ash kit and Zildjian A Custom cymbals. Rodd uses a Shure SM58 microphone. In case you haven't guessed, this information has all been written down for me.

RHV: What's your best on tour story?
There's been a few. One that springs to mind is when we played a show in London a while ago, and afterwards we were invited to this party by some friends. At this party a writer from a well-known music publication got particularly smashed, and she decided to have a bit of a dance on the kitchen table. Of course it all went horribly wrong and she lost her balance and fell onto a bunch of wooden kitchen chairs. It looked REALLY bad, but I was pretty drunk and got that thing where you know you shouldn't laugh at something, but that makes you laugh even more. We left soon after.

RHV: What do you demand on your rider?
We're still at the stage where we're not really in a position to be making demands. We're happy just to play the show, if any free drinks or food happen to be thrown our way, then we're very grateful.

RHV: What's your website?
