INTERVIEW: Tin Soldiers

RHV: Tell us who you are and where you're from?.
We are Tin Soldiers from Kent.

RHV: Describe your music.
Matt W: Pop rock in the style of Foo Fighters, Feeder and Green Day
Chris: Rock pop with singles galore
Matt J: Ridiculously catchy. Pock (pop/rock). I made that word up. Very loud if we want it to be.

RHV: Tell us how the band formed in three sentences.
Matt W: Rich and I first met up at my birthday party a few years back (when Rich gate crashed it!). We started talking music almost straight away. Chris and Matt joined through friends.
Chris: Rich rang me. Asked me a question. I said yes.
Rich: Most of it’s through friends, Emma in particular. She took me along to Matts birthday and I met Chris through her. Matt J I met through friends who said he was looking to join a band.
Matt J: I auditioned. I got the part. Tin Soldiers were born.

RHV: What did you do before you were in a band?
Matt W: Mainly we have all been students, doing odd jobs here and there in bars and clubs
Chris: Played in other bands. I’ve always been in a band.
Rich: Been in bands of one sort or another ever since school days.
Matt J: At school in Bromley and also in an alternative grunge band called Eliminator Jr.

Chris: Touring promoting drinking driving gigging more driving
Matt J: Touring around over the next few weeks. Ask Rich...

Matt W: Well not mail, but we did get given a little model Tin Soldier that is still in the tourbus!
Chris: A random got in contact over one of the making of videos on our YouTube. We are now seeing each other.
Matt J: Fan mail? We aren't that big yet are we?

RHV: What music do you have on repeat in the tourbus?
Matt W: Normally Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, or any other metal and rock we have to hand!
Chris: Foos and biffy
Rich: Yea definitely plenty of Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails and Biffy. And loads of the Beatles! Especially when Chris is in charge of the iPod! Mainly depends who’s driving and whether we’re driving to or from a gig.
Matt J: Depends who's up front. If its me or Chris, Beatles, Nirvana, Zeppelin, Wu Tang Clan, lots of stuff. If it’s Matt W then Paul Weller. If it’s Rich then Girls Aloud.

RHV: What gear do you use?
Matt W: I play a home made guitar!
Rich: Gibson guitars with Mesa amps
Chris: I use D.W. blue oyster collector’s series with paiste and ziljian cymbals and Gibraltar hardware.
Matt J: A 2008 Rickenbacker 4003 Jetglo. Amp wise i just got my new baby... just got it this weekend. Ashdown ABM Evo II Valve head with an Ashdown 410 Deep cab. A monster. And every now and again I stomp on the Electroharmonix Big Muff.

RHV: What's your best on tour story?
Rich: When we played In The City in Manchester we took our band van, affectionately called the munchbag. However as we got to Manchester it started to rain. We turned on the windscreen wipers and the wiper motor fell apart. Luckily there are lots of traffic lights in Manchester so at every set we stopped at Matt had to jump out of the van and manually pull the wipers across the window. When it started raining too heavily Chris came up with a solution. He is convinced that gaffa tape fixes everything so he wound it around the wipers and looped it back through the windows, making a pulley system. We then drove the rest of the way to the hotel with Matt using the gaffa tape pulley to work the windscreen wipers! Genius! When things got too bad we ended up having to call the RAC and the guy managed to take apart the dashboard and fix the motor. Only thing was the wipers needed resetting, so every time they were used they got stuck on the edge of the windscreen. Chris and some more gaffa tape managed to fix a bottle top to the side of the windscreen – affectionately known as the nipple – and this stopped the winders sticking to the edge of the window and we managed to get to our hotel!

RHV: What do you demand on your rider?
Matt W: Anything! Seriously Me and Chris do eat anything and lots of it!
Chris: And Beer
Matt J: Never had one but when I do it will consist of the following: 4 doughnuts, 1 bag of Minstrels, 1 bag of mini eggs, 1 chicken and stuffing sandwich/KFC popcorn chicken. 4 bottles of Stella. 2 bottles of water. 2 packets of Chewits. 1 pack of Doritos. 1 pack of Pokemon cards.
