London-based Scottish guitar maestro Colin Pollock’s first full studio album warms the heart and brings a glint to the eye with its subtle examination of often unpalatable truths. The opener – A Little Piece of You – a perhaps deceptively optimistic unfolding of a naïve love affair, soon to be Long Gone, tempts you through the looking glass into his colourful world. And then he’s got you.

Amidst a thorny tangle of world-weary wreckage lie a dozen lyrically diverse tales – of twisted love (The Gold Digger Gets It), broken souls lurking in the mire of reality TV celebrity (New Depths in Shallow) and the faded glory of end-of-pier performers (It’s a Drag), to mention but a few, set against a background of guitar perfection that would even make a sultan swing.

Four years in gestation, the record brings together top-flight musicians including Steve Honest on pedal steel and the inimitable Luke Juby who played keyboards on the album before going off on a massive world tour with pop sensation Mika. Drum and percussion was provided by Max Zastiera and Vinzenz Benjamin appears on bass guitar. Backing vocals were largely provided by Kim Chandler but she was joined on the album’s ultimate track – The Road is Long, about the life and times of Dr. Martin Luther King – by divas Annabel Williams and Rietta Austin.

For every pleasure of a poignant riff there’s the pay-off of a beautifully crafted aside. This is soul-felt music for grown-ups that packs some mean hooks.

As his strongest influences, Colin cites artists such as Mark Knopfler, Richard Thompson, JJ Cale and Bob Dylan.

UK tour dates to be announced soon
