It’s never easy to write a second record, it’s even harder to write a second record when your first received critical acclaim from tastemakers such as Pitchfork, Zane Lowe, DIY, The Fly, Clash and NME etc, and also won you an ARIA. This is the task that DZ Deathrays have spent the last 18 months battling, tinkering and honing their craft until things were just as they should be.
After touring the world circuit constantly for 2 years (with acts like Foo Fighters, Crystal Castles, Ratatat, Sleigh Bells + festivals such as Reading & Leeds, The Great Escape, Laneway Festival, Splendour in the Grass, Big Day Out), in early 2013 Shane Parsons and Simon Ridley decided to bunker down in the remote location of Yass in country NSW to begin writing their second record.
Recorded over the course of 6 weeks, where they took in 16hr days, at The Grove studio with producer Burke Reid (MSTRKRFT, The Drones, The Mess Hall) ‘Black Rat’ is an album that shows a truly amazing progression to DZ Deathrays sound whilst remaining true to their best and signature self, something that new single ‘Gina Works At Hearts’ encapsulates perfectly.
Available to digitally download now ‘Gina Works At Hearts’ is a glimpse of what’s to come from the bands sophomore record. With UK release details to be announced soon, ‘Black Rat’ will be released by I Oh You in Australia on May 2nd.
DZ Deathrays will be heading out on tour throughout March and April.
