Laeto: FREE album!

Laeto have been making melodic rock music for almost 13 years. In 2000 Laeto released an album on Guided Missile Records. This had been recorded by renowned engineer Michael Brennan Jnr (Super Furry Animals, My Bloody Valentine, Faith No More) and featured a performance from Mogwai multi-instrumentalist Barry Burns. The previous year, invited by the bands themselves, they had joined Idlewild on an extensive UK tour and opened for legendary post-punk icons Fugazi.

Uncomfortable with increasing knowledge of the band, they retreated into their practice room finding solace in awkward rhythms and magical chord progressions emerging only occasionally for support slots with the likes of Les Savy Fav and Cave In. Their 2004 follow up album ‘ Zwoa’, prompted the coining of the term ‘victory rock’. This release raised a few eyebrows, not least amongst Irish chart botherers and pop rockers Snow Patrol who asked them to open for them on their final UK tour of 2005. Laeto gladly accepted but upon completion again retreated to the safety of their practice cocoon.

Having basically disappeared for six years Laeto have surprised everyone by calmly announcing on a Tuesday afternoon in December that they have released their third full-length album (simply titled ‘III’) for free at www.laeto.co.uk

On the subject of releasing the album for free the band’s spokesman and manager Calvin Armstrong said “Laeto have always believed that good music is a basic human right. Once they realised how good this record was they could not, in good conscience, charge anyone for it.”
