Meet… Sea of Bees

Sea of Bees is Julie Baenziger, a 26 year old singer, songwriter from Sacramento, California. A multi-instrumentalist who has garnered much praise from American critics such as Spin and Indie Shuffle and with Rough Trade Shops recently describing her as “without a doubt one of the best female voices of the year”, all this paves the way for the release of her debut album, ‘Song For The Ravens’, released on Heavenly Recordings in February next year.

‘The Woods’ EP, released October 18th, is the perfect introduction to Sea Of Bees. In her own words, ‘The Woods’ is “based upon the hope and the dream of laying with someone you love.” It is hypnotic, wistful and utterly disarming. B-side ‘Lightfriend’, at just 53 seconds, sounds like it was recorded inside of an enchanted music-box, twinkling, delicate and allowing the lulling warmness of Baenziger’s vocals to be brought to the fore. Sea Of Bees sites musical references as diverse as Jeremy Enigk from Sunny Day Real Estate, local Sacramento band The Honeytrees for their “high soft melodies”, Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes, yet the music she so beautifully weaves is completely her own. Freak-folk, as she coins her music, will undoubtedly be the sound of 2011.
