The first JD Set of 2011 took place in London at XOYO last night (Thursday 24th March) with Tim Wheeler of Ash leading a cast of up and coming bands and a surprise guest in honouring Pixies. Throughout the night Tim was joined by a cast of up and coming artists and the odd special guest playing songs from Pixies five albums.

First on were Sheffield’s The Crookes, whose wry intelligent Northern pop produced new twists on classics such as ‘Here Comes Your Man’. Ma Mentor were next to take the stage with Tim for the genius of ‘Monkey Gone To Heaven’ and more before the show moved on to a set of duets with Emmy The Great before the high volume and rock dynamics of Belfast’s own And So I Watch You From Afar took the roof off, culminating in a visceral, thrilling rush through ‘Come On Pilgrim’s ‘Isla De Encanta to close the night.

Fittingly, the encore saw Tim joined by his fellow Ash band members and special guest, Bloc Party’s Russell Lissack for a further clutch of Pixies classics before a special treat for the assembled Ash fans in the shape of Ash classics ‘Petrol’ and ‘Burn Baby Burn’.

If you weren’t lucky enough to be at this very special show then you can still see the bands in action when the JD Set London comes to Channel 4 on Thursday April 21st. You can also see exclusive video footage of the artists in rehearsal now at whilst the show itself will be online soon, more details to follow.

The JD Set continues throughout the Spring. Glasgow welcomes Sharleen Spiteri, Ian McCulloch, Kate Nash, Steve Mason, Ramona and Kid Adrift to the O2 ABC2 on 20th April to honour David Bowie before the final of this year’s three shows sees Mancunian legend Mani join up with The Enemy’s Tom Clarke, The Moons, Kid British and Little Barrie to pay tribute to one of the city’s most enduring bands, The Smiths.
