Airship – Kids

NAME: Airship
DATE: 13June2011

LABEL: PIAS Recordings

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Hey! Your shoelaces are United!

LOCATION: Manchester

LINE UP: Elliott Williams, Marcus Wheeldon, Steven Griffiths, Tom Dyball.

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Why is Christiano Ronaldo so good at football? It’s because he can run very fast with the ball without looking down and getting distracted by his expensive shiny lucrative football boots.

You have to worry for Airship, whose latest single ‘kids’ has its gaze firmly fixed on its shoes, yet rattles along at a rather thrilling breakneck pace. Cleverly, it also looks back over its shoulder, at childhoods lost. Bands past, too – there’s a touch of My Vitriol in amongst all the delightful guitar noise.

Singer Elliot Williams seems to be still searching for his own voice, all black overcoated Mancunian one minute, then leaping into higher, radio-friendly registers for the anthemic bits the next. But on the whole this is promising stuff.

SOUNDS LIKE: My Vitriol, Editors, Smashing Pumpkins.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You need to add a little pep to your workout but don’t want to turn to that 90s house compilation just yet.
