AJ Unity – Sweet Roses

NAME: AJ Unity
ALBUM: Sweet Roses
YEAR: 2010 (May 31st)
LABEL: Nana
RATING: 1/5

FIVE WORD REVIEW: The album Morcheeba avoided making.

LOCATION: London, UK

LINE UP: Naomi Suzuki (vocals) / Philipp M. Moll (vocals/everything else)

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Model, actress, singer, presenter, producer and songwriter Suzuki joins forces with ‘musical entrepreneur’ Moll to whimper out a kitten’s fart puff of banality that guises as ‘experimentalism’. Drawn out, overly tonal and nigh comatose, ‘Sweet Roses’ just washes over you to no register at all. Musical marijuana… and not the good stuff Robbo at The Red Lion can get, either. Holst’s ‘Jupiter’ is covered here, which I think is just a cheap trick to get some BBC ident money, or to get on a reel when England inevitably crash out of the World Cup. However, ‘Adagio’ is actually a lovely way to end a tiresome chill-out album.

SOUNDS LIKE: your new girlfriend invites you to a dinner party with her City friends, who have more money than Crosius and the haircuts to match. I guarantee that this will be on the Bose stereo as the taste-free starter is splashed onto your expensive plate.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF YOU LIKE: trudging around an insipid sonic soundscape.
