Akarusi Yami – Third Eye, Wide Open

NAME: Akarusi Yami
SINGLE: Third Eye, Wide Open

LABEL: Self released

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Hardcore metal with a vengeance

LOCATION: Nottingham

LINE UP: Tom Brumpton vocals, TK guitars, Adam Jones drums

WHAT’S THE STORY?: As one never fearful of receiving gifts it was with pleasure to hear that Nottingham band Akarusi Yami had stepped forth with the free give away of their debut single ‘Third Eye, Wide Open’. It is a pleasure that soon turned to real joy as the track swung into attack delivering a more than solid slice of hardcore metal that rips through the listener from the opening crescendo of intensity. With debut album ‘Ouroborous’ due for release on September 5th of this year the single is a fine taster to entice people onto that and probably impatiently after hearing this track.
The seeds of the idea began in 2009 with guitarist TK and then in discussions with vocalist Tom Brumpton in the September of last year a band started to turn into reality. The two of them had spent years in bands such as Incidious and Kallous so wavelengths were aligned without a struggle and they brought their love of progressive metal and the intense relentlessness of industrial noises to combine into their own distinct sound. Scarlet’s Wake drummer Adam Jones came in adding a power that is obvious from the very first break of sound on the single, the guy hits hard and mercilessly.‘Third Eye, Wide Open’ is a constant barrage of drilled metal that leaps from the Hatebreed/Five Finger Death Punch mosh pits and would easily enhance any of their releases.
The single is not perfect, near but the single moment that does not quite work for me is the brief part where Brumpton switches from his growling yells into a clean vocal and it is not at the same level at all. When the album is released we will see if this small part was just an aberration or the theme to their sound. Hopefully the former but it really is just a slight niggle rather than a flaw with this great track. Produced by Tim Turan(Emperor, Plan B),as with the album, ‘Third Eye, Wide Open’ is the opening blast from a band that will be raising anticipation and acclaim for themselves and their future offering in a few months, I for one will be in line for a copy.

SOUNDS LIKE: Five Finger Death Punch, Hatebreed

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You like your metal to forget about sneaking up on you but to slap you from the opening note.
