NAME: AM
SINGLE: Self Preservation
DATE: 26July2010
LABEL: Filter US Recordings
RATING: 4/5
FIVE WORD REVIEW: Professional, skillful, lighthearted holiday tune
LOCATION: New Orleans, Tulsa, California.
LINE UP: AM ( guitar/ vocals/ ukelele), Brett Bixby (synths), Chris Lovejoy (percussion)
WHAT’S THE STORY?: A fact about AM: much of his debut album featured on MTV’s The Hills. If ‘Self Preservation’ is even vaguely reminiscent of his first album this fact is a travesty. Music this well produced, this respectful of its influences yet different from them, and this optimistic belongs nestled in vinyl collections somewhere between The Beach Boys and The Coral, rather than providing background noise for the ramblings of those millionaires who pretend their Teen Vogue internships are actually necessary for pocket money (I may have seen one or two episodes).
SOUNDS LIKE: The catchier moments of The Magic Numbers and it’s hard to escape the Beck vibe.
YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You don’t mind having to listen to Beyonce’s I AM Sasha Fierce fifteen times before finding his splendid track. Tricky name, great song.
