Anathema – We’re here because we’re here

NAME: Anathema
ALBUM: We’re here because we’re here
DATE: 31May2010

LABEL: K scope

FIVE WORD REVIEW: So close, yet so far

LOCATION: Liverpool, UK

LINE UP: Vincent Cavanagh (lead vocals), Daniel Cavanagh (lead guitar), Les Smith (bass), Jamie Cavanagh (drums), John Douglas (vocals)

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Around in one form or another since the early 90’s, over the years Anathema have carefully shaped and sculpted their sound into a unique post-rock/metal hybrid.

SOUNDS LIKE: Throughout, Anathema dazzle with their mastery of the instruments at their disposal, consistently producing tracks that are layered, thoughtful, complex, surprising and ultimately quite spiritual. The time taken to engineer this really shows through in the quality and you can just kick back, close your eyes, and let the sound wash over you. Or you could if the whole work wasn’t let down by one crucial factor: the lyrics.

They’re just not good. In delivery or content. Trying for sophistication, they address the gamut of human emotion and experience: love, faith, hope, but do so in such an earnest, clichéd, pompous manner they become faintly ludicrous, especially when backed by the epic nature of the instrumentals. At times it’s like listening to the early gothic metal days of Lacuna Coil, but without the enjoyable melodramatic ‘grrr’ factor that made it work for the eponymous Italians.

Not enough here to love or hate ‘We’re here because we’re here’ is a confusing hybrid, but one that offers great future potential.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You like the idea of Explosions in the sky and ‘Comalies’ getting in a car crash, except music comes out instead of blood.
