Angus & Julia Stone – Down the Way

NAME: Angus & Julia Stone
ALBUM: Down the Way
YEAR: 2010 (Mar 15th)
LABEL: Flock music
RATING: 4/5

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Dreamy sounds kissing your eardrums

LOCATION: Sydney, Australia

LINE UP: Angus Stone, Julia Stone

WHAT’S THE STORY?: If this album was a cake, first impressions would place it in the Battenburg section. Inoffensive, pleasing and the sort of album your grandmother would offer you a slice of. You would accept, and I doubt you’d expect too much from it. But tuck into this album further and the creamy vocals of Julia Stone will make you forgive your grandmother that knitted jumper she made you wear at Christmas. Alternating on lead vocals for each song, the siblings have an album that similarly interchanges between rousing, melancholy, chirpy, reflective, each song with its own personality. Angus’ voice is distinctive but Julia lifts this album and allows the acoustic tracks to come alive.

SOUNDS LIKE: Bjork on a hot summer’s afternoon, chilling out in the park and thinking good thoughts

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF YOU LIKE: to sit round a campfire listening to someone strumming an acoustic guitar
