NAME: Ann Scott
ALBUM: Flo
YEAR: 2010 (June 7th)
LABEL: Raghouse
RATING: 4/5
FIVE WORD REVIEW: Effortlessly otherworldly and utterly gorgeous.
LOCATION: Dublin, Ireland
LINE UP: Ann Scott (vocals and very nearly everything else)
WHAT’S THE STORY?: Returning for her third indie/folk album, Scott releases her most personal and haunting collection to date; the tunes are lush and easy, thoroughly inventive, constantly interesting and really rather beautiful. Numerous highlights include the blissful ‘Universe’, the echoing death-drum driven ‘Candy’, the powerful ‘Sally’ and the title track ‘Flo’, which is easily one of the most stunning songs you’ll hear this year. Across the board, the lyrics are always poetic and thoughtful – not a word is wasted. Her breathy and fragile voice reverbs throughout the set, like a lonely ghost in haunted mansion.
SOUNDS LIKE: it’s hard not to draw comparisons to Tori Amos at her most restrained. But it’s a favourable similarity that shows just how good Ann Scott is.
