LABEL: Red Bull Records

FIVE WORD REVIEW: A hit, against all odds

LOCATION: California, USA

LINE UP: Aaron Bruno

WHAT’S THE STORY?: It was bound to happen. Having wormed its way into the ear of American pop and quickly flushed out when David Guetta took over, dubstep seems to have found a new host in the American indie scene. It’s just a little sad that Aaron Bruno has decided to appropriate a simplified cliche for his debut single.

So there we are. Indie musician tries to do something new and fails. Case closed, right?

Except… it also happens to be bloody good. Perhaps the blurts of bass are laughable by London standards, but with them you get plucked strings, a jaunty “la la la” piano interlude, and most of all, Aaron Bruno’s throat lacerating voice, summoning up demons from his throat with the gravelly gravity of a Mark Lanegan or Jack White. The chorus may only consist of one word – but as one-word choruses go, it’s up there with Diana Vickers’ ‘Once’. We’ll have more of these failures, please.

SOUNDS LIKE: There’s something almost bluesy about it.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You like a bit more soul and passion, and a little less knowing ennui.
