Bearcraft – Yestreen

NAME: Bearcraft
ALBUM: Yestreen
DATE: 16August2010

LABEL: Hottwerk Records

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Cosmic, thought provoking folky perfection

LOCATION: Dalston, London

LINE UP: Dicky Moore

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Sometime Scritti Politti guitarist Dicky Moore branches out into the truly bizarre direction of synth folk.

Diverse and intriguing, Bearcraft’s debut ‘Yestreen’ melts a vast network of lyrical themes into an exciting, intense and almost philosophical sound. Seriously. Lend this album your ears – I defy anyone to not fall completely in love with it. One moment you’re adventuring through medieval forests and castles, and the next Bearcraft transport you into outer space to float awhile among asteroids and alien beings. There’s enough ingenuity here to make each track sound fresh, yet enough synth for a truly 80s retro edge. Perfect.

Standout tracks are the recently released ‘Werewolf’ and the 8-bit homage of opener ‘Hero Man Gets To The Castle,’ with its Mario-referencing lyrics and videogame bleeps. Even the odd acoustic moment doesn’t slow things down, rather they add to the euphoric, fantastical atmosphere of the album as a whole.

This deserves to be massive!

SOUNDS LIKE: Of Montreal and the Pet Shop Boys having a party in space. With an acoustic chillout room to die for.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You’re into The Knife, Crystal Castles, The Teenagers, MGMT
