Name: Beggar Joe
Release: Album Sampler
Label: CAT Records
Year: 2009
Rating: 4/5
Having met at university and spent a fair amount of time playing busking gigs, the five musicians who make up Beggar Joe were probably a little taken aback when producer heavyweight Al Stone snapped them up. Still, having caused more of a whirlwind than a stir in their native Manchester, it’s no surprise that Mr Stone appreciated these guys as much as their pedestrian fans around Salford.
The three tracks on the sampler give a taste of what’s to come on their eponymously titled full debut released on October 5th. Soulful, simple and catchy, the fivesome show off their talents in a non-indulgent way. Since acoustic backdrops and handsome vocal parts came into fashion with the likes of Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz, Beggar Joe are pulling into the station right on time.
Keeping with their busking roots, the band have gigs booked in Kings Cross Station as well as in Manchester and at the Watts Festival throughout July.
