Black Circles – Little Girl

NAME: Black Circles
SINGLE: Little Girl
DATE: 19August2010

LABEL: self-release

RATING: 2/5

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Diet, Caffeine Free Foo Fighters

LOCATION: London, UK

LINE UP: Dan – Guitar, Vocals. Mayumi – Bass, Backing Vocals. Simon – Drums.

WHAT’S THE STORY?: ‘Little Girl’ starts promisingly, with a few seconds of menacing, Queens of the Stone Age style riffing, but speeds downhill at an alarming rate as the Dave Grohl-aping vocals kick in and ruin it for everyone. Sounds like our hapless singer is bemoaning the naggings and demands of the ‘little girl’ of the title (presumably his girlfriend and not in reference to a sinister ‘Tideland’/ ‘’Lolita’ situation) and warning her of his need to ‘get away.’ The guitars are fuzzy and skuzzy enough but seem to lack the oomph of the bands London’s Black Circles are clearly inspired by.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the Foo Fighters’ sound as much as anyone, but on this track the Black Circles sound like a tribute band who have tried their hand at writing their own songs with pretty lackluster results. The lyrical witticisms and wry humor of their inspirations are notably absent, relying on straightforward, predicable rhymes to tell the age-old tale of a doormat boyfriend fighting back. Looking past this, the bass bounces the song happily forward but the total lack of originality here makes ‘Little Girl’ a catchy hook and not much else. It’s not all bad news for the Black Circles though; the two other tracks on their Myspace page demonstrate a far more interesting sound, and their live performance has received numerous great reviews.

Fun enough to bop your head along to if that’s your thing but not about to set the world alight any time soon.

SOUNDS LIKE: A bizarrely generic concoction of Foo Fighters, QOTSA, Echo Park era Feeder and Open Hand.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You like your music fast, simple, catchy but ultimately vacuous.
