Bodi Bill – Two In One

NAME: Bodi Bill
ALBUM: Two In One
YEAR: 2010 (May 24th)
LABEL: Sinnbus
RATING: 4/5

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Varied electronica from classy Germans

LOCATION: Berlin, Germany

LINE UP: Well, we know they are a three piece with Fabian Fenk on vocals, but I’ll be damned if I can find any info about the other two guys! Answers on an email please…

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Following the success of their debut ‘Next Time’, they decided to beef up their considerable achievement on the continent by releasing ‘Two In One’ here in the UK, and it doesn’t disappoint. There is an overall dark ambience throughout the disc that starts very experimentally electronic, but grows and develops into something of an indie crossover with folk splashes. At times it’s all very stark, but it’s inventive arrangements and varied songs entertain at all times. Highlights include slowburner ‘Tip Toe Walk’ and the atmospheric ‘Traffic Jam’ with their electronica sounds, but also included are ‘Very Small’ which has sweeping strings, melodic vocals, great guitar and climactic beats, to the last track ‘Willem’, an acoustic song with genuine passion and pomp, with a smatter of camp fun.

SOUNDS LIKE: The first few tracks are very much of the German underground scene, but Fenk’s vocals remind me of Sam Sparrow. Although Fenk’s voice isn’t as powerful as Sparrow’s, it’s just as expressive and works for a more stripped sound. If you were some sort of arsehole, you could say that ‘Two In One’ builds and ebbs like a digital sea, washing up on an evening beach of folksy charm. But you’re not an arsehole… are you?

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF YOU LIKE: varied chill-out music with just enough bite to get under your skin.
