Okay. I am doing my best to be objective here. But, to be frank, it’s not easy. Listening to people scream at me in German is not my favourite way to spend the afternoon, so if this review comes across as somewhat negative, please attribute it to a childhood hating bands like Cannibal Corpse as they were blared out at full volume from my angsty teenage brother’s bedroom.Callejon are a German Zombiecore band, and to their credit, they’re been around for over five years, so they must be doing something right. They have all the fantastically hectic electric guitar solos and mental drumming bits, topped off by Bastian Sobtzick’s passionate vocals that I predict will be non-existent in a few years. I winced for his larynx.

God, I’m not being objective enough here. Alright. I reckon that if I were in a mosh pit surrounded by a billion death-metal goth types head-banging it out to the beats of these guys – oh, and if I understood more German than “Ich wohne in einen Wohnewagon” (“I live in a caravan”) – then I’d probably enjoy this album. I mean, for what they are – annihilating thrash-metal playing head-cases – they’re actually pretty good. And ‘Phantomschmerz’ manages some of the more chilled-out, Evanescence-style stuff. Heart-rending. In a good way.

But what’s weird about the album is the occasional gruff sentences of malevolently barked out German. I think it’s meant to add atmosphere but it just sounds laughably incongruent.
