Chris Ricketts & Matt Willshire – Simple Folk

NAME: Chris Ricketts & Matt Willshire
YEAR: 2010 (April 1st)
LABEL: unsigned

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Unconvincing Folk from university boys.

LOCATION: Newcastle, England

LINE UP: Chris Ricketts (Vocals/Guitar), Matt Willshire (Bass)

WHAT’S THE STORY?: This duo from the pastures of Newcastle University have been playing with each other since last summer and have released this album to showcase a number of traditional folk songs with one original thrown in. ‘Chase the Buffalo’ starts strongly with great rhythm and skilful guitar playing, clearly defining what this album is all about. Ricketts own ‘Take Me As Your Own’ expresses the musicians’ talent with their instruments but the lyrics dip in form compared the rest of the album. Although these particular traditional songs will be present in music forever you can’t help but feel that numbers such as ‘Briery Bush’ or ‘Drunken Maidens’ could be more credibly presented. Ricketts often waivers from his folky accent whilst singing, giving the feeling that he is lesser a folk singer and more a singer doing a folk album.
