Codeine Velvet Club – Vanity Kills

NAME: Codeine Velvet Club
SINGLE: Vanity Kills

YEAR: 2010 (April 5th)

LABEL: Island Records

RATING: 4/5

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Big, Dark Music Noir works!

LOCATION: Glasgow, UK

LINE UP: Jon Lawler (guitar/vocals) / Lour Hickey (vocals) / Will Foster (keys/guitar) / Lewis Gordon (bass) / Ross McFarlane (drums)

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Lawler delivers his familiar Fratellis flavour, drenched in the strong black coffee of film noir, post-war cynacism. Echoing a gloom alongside the rich jazz brass, the track holds it’s weight perfectly with the brightness of the strings and key changes, keeping it catchy whilst rhythmic with the Rockabilly swing. In terms of the vocals, the line “There’s got to be something more than this” seems to fit perfectly with the theme, and the duet of Jon Lawler and Lou Hickey agrees with the Noir couples tradition.

SOUNDS LIKE: The Fratellis with a dark Noir twist and a strong Rockabilly strut.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF YOU LIKE: The Fratellis, The Hot Rod Gang, film composer John Barry.
