WHAT’S THE STORY?: Once upon a time David E. Sugar used to play the Asylum club on Percy Street, making sweet, sweet chiptune. Now he’s a big man with labelled releases and everything. His new album ’Memory Store’ is out today!

SOUNDS LIKE: Well, three seconds in and you can see Dave hasn’t forgotten his roots; the chip-tune is still strong in this man. Prepare to experience those quirky combinations of left-of-field midi sounds for that nerdy dance vibe we love so much.

Except we seem to have lost something along the way.

The problem is that the album sounds ‘cool’. The sort of cool where you expect adding a flashily coloured trilby to your regular wardrobe rotation will suddenly turn you into an incomparable lady magnet, when in fact it makes you look like a complete twit. This is mostly down to the style of vocal presentation which could be described as ‘urban’ and ‘real’ but mostly just seems ‘put on’.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: you enjoy that Hot Chip lark.
