Dead And Divine – The Machines We Are

NAME: Dead And Divine
ALBUM: The Machines We Are
DATE: 6July2010

LABEL: Hassle Records

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Scream, chug, sing, chug, scream

LOCATION: Burlington,Ontario,Canada.

LINE UP: Matt Tobin (vocals),Chris LeMasters(guitar),Kellan Lindsay(bass),Sebastein Lueth(guitar),Kyle Anderson(drums).

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Dead And Divine aren’t exactly pioneers. This ten track album is an admirable exhibition of metallic hardcore, however it is unashamedly derivative in its design. Opener `The Sugar Sickness’ sounds like an Every Time I Die B-side. `Creature’ is unequivocally reminiscent of The Bled. Therefore, whilst these tracks are well-executed, they are tragically devoid of imagination.

On the other hand, the band shine on `The Lovely Bones’, an experimental, Thrice-esque track where the group marry Radiohead’s ambience with their own hardcore tendencies. Unfortunately `The Lovely Bones’ is a monentary departure and ‘Cassandra Syndrome’ demonstrates a return to the group’s strict metalcore formula. I would enjoy criticisng Dead and Divine for their unoriginality, but they are irrefutably skilled at their trade. It is just a shame that the band can’t explore their depth of talent any further.

Overall, The Machines We Are is an enjoyable metalcore record and fans of both hardcore and metal will find satisfying elements within Dead and Divine’s output. Although,if you’re expecting a genuinely groundbreaking piece of heavy music this album will be immeasureably dissapointing.

SOUNDS LIKE: Every Time I Die, The Bled, Cancer Bats, Underoath.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You appreciate generic, yet competently crafted metalcore tracks. Also, it has to be clarified that Dead and Divine lean more towards the hardcore spectrum of their genre.Consequently,Parkway Drive and Suicide Silence fans will be far from gratified.
