Dokkebi Q – Hardcore Cherry Bonbon

NAME: Dokkebi Q
ALBUM: Hardcore Cherry Bonbon
YEAR: 2010 (May 10th)

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Inventive and playful hardcore dub

LINE UP: Kiki Hitomi (vocals) / Gorgonn (electronic bass and beats)

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Living in Dalston, East London, this pair of musical misfits found a matched love of hardcore punk and dub and put together Dokkebi Q, an exciting and enjoyable take on dub at it’s most fun. ‘Hardcore Cherry Bonbon’ is edgy, cacophonous, menacing and jangly, all the while keeping it’s mischievous and lighthearted theme to the very end. Standout tracks include ‘Black Vomit’ which is very much of the old-skool dub party, and the warped bass of title track ‘Hardcore Cherry Bonbon’ will slip inside your brain like a funky maggot. It is easily accessible, even for dub newbies; lots of odd sounds (accordions, screeches, cuckoos) jammed in means there is always something going on.

SOUNDS LIKE: a very happy King Tubby, with better equipment.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF YOU LIKE: shiny happy free summer festivals in Notting Hill, or just miss Bentley Rhythm Ace. Where the hell did they go, eh?
