earthtone9 – Inside, Embers Glow…

NAME: earthtone9

LABEL: Copro Records

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Generous helpings of metal nostalgia

LOCATION: Nottingham, UK

LINE UP: Karl Middleton – Vocals, Owen Packard – Guitar, Joe Roberts – Guitar / Vocals, Dave Anderson – Bass, Simon Hutchby – Drums

WHAT’S THE STORY?: earthtone9 imploded in 2002, just as the nu-metal craze that gave us Papa Roach and Linkin Park (er, thanks guys..) was sweeping up stroppy, disaffected teenagers everywhere.

This is a shame; for a while before this they had graced the pages of stroppy, disaffected teenager bible, Kerrang magazine, and had gained a growing and rabid fanbase thanks to their hardcore vocals and galloping riffs. They could have been huge; melodic yet heavy enough in places to have something for everyone, but alas, it was not to be.

Thankfully though, the metal gods have been kind, and those who missed out back then can discover this great and innovative (for their time) band with the extensive 16 tracks on offer here. Unfortunately now there is a hulking mass of groups out there that sound very similar, but earthtone9 have just the right amount of soaring vocals and pounding rhythms to still set them apart and deliver a ‘best of’ that doesn’t leave you reaching for the ‘skip’ button at any point.

A nostalgic trip down the somewhat uneven memory lane of UK metal. Way cooler to say you were into these guys rather than Linkin Park, right?

SOUNDS LIKE: Deftones, Tool, Korn and myriad of other melodic crunchy metal bands of varying success.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: back in ’98 you could fit your entire body into one leg of your jeans.
