Funeral For A Friend – Broken Foundation

NAME: Funeral For A Friend
SINGLE: Broken Foundation
DATE: 13June2011

LABEL: Distiller Records

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Welshmen bring out the riffs.

LOCATION: Bridgend, Wales

LINE UP: Matthew Davies-Kreye – lead vocals; Kris Coombs-Roberts – guitar, backing vocals; Gavin Burrough – guitar, backing vocals (previously bass); Ryan Richards – drums, unclean vocals; Richard Boucher – bass

WHAT’S THE STORY?: ‘Welcome Home Armageddon’ has given Funeral For A Friend a new lease of life, although many still would not expect the Welshmen to release this monstrous juggernaut as a single.

‘Broken Foundation‘ is arguably the band’s heaviest song to date, amalgamating titanic riffs with Ryan Richards’ ferocious screams to form a musical motif that will leave fans of Killswitch Engage with their jaws perched on the floor.

Matthew Davies-Kreye’s clean vocals also enter the mix fittingly and help to showcase how the archetypal sing/scream dynamic should be executed.

Its heavy nature means that it is unlikely to reach the popularity of ‘Juneau’ or ‘Escape Artists Never Die’, but the single acts as a reminder that Funeral For A Friend remain as one of the UK alternative scene’s shining lights.

SOUNDS LIKE: The perfect substitute for a stress ball. There is simply nothing quite as liberating as screaming every word of this ruthlessly heavy track.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: Bands such as Architects, Underoath and Kilswitch Engage are essential parts of your music library.
