Artist: Funeral For A Friend
Single: ‘Waterfront Dance Club / Beneath The Burning Tree’
Label: Join Us
Year: 2008
Rating: 3/5
I first heard Funeral For A Friend shortly after their inception, and I always felt a little underwhelmed by them. Sure, they were aggressive, youthful and had plenty of skill, but there was always something missing, and that was the killer melodic edge they’ve perfected in time for their double A-Side ‘Waterfront Dance Club / Beneath The Burning Tree’.
Funeral For A Friend have matured well as a band and their song writing has improved. The killer hooks and strong vocals in ‘Waterfront Dance Club’ sit well in the simplistic framework, while ‘Beneath The Burning Tree’ shows signs of the new and the old, though it’s difficult to shake that feeling that they’d benefit from a little screaming again. A little aggression goes a long way in the Post Hardcore genre and as soon as Funeral For A Friend perfects the balance they’ll be well on their way to a place in the hall of fame. Still underwhelmed, for the time being…
