Heavy Dials – Box of Styles

NAME: Heavy Dials
EP: Box of Styles
DATE: 12October2010

LABEL: Unsigned

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Powerful debut. Expect great things

LOCATION: Brighton, UK

LINE UP: Peppi Knott (Vocals/Instrumentation), Ben Harris (Bass, Programming), Dave Moody (Instrumentation).

WHAT’S THE STORY?: And today! Coming in on the RHV Indy 500 are Brightonian, electro-indie outfit, Heavy Dials, with their brand new ep ‘Box of Styles’! Coolly winning themselves atleast fifty Awesome Points for rhyming their release title with their band name.

Seriously, say the name, pause, meet the fourth walls’ gaze for a split second, slip on some aviator shades and then say the title. Winner every time.

SOUNDS LIKE: For a debut release this displays a staggering amount of cool self assurance. Wildly creative and experimental in its sound, but also focused – this isn’t a blind mish-mash, but a carefully cultivated test of how these artists can stretch their music. Difficult to pin down it might best be described as electro-chillout meets oriental-tinged, down-beat, spaghetti western. In an abandoned swimming pool. Which is awesome.

Curiously, they actually have a large degree in common with similar, fresh-faced, electro-dub group, Z.electric. But where Z has the grimier urban edge, the Dials have a sort of ‘waiting darkness’ to them, a cold, lonely feeling. This is probably why the EP isn’t called ‘Box of Smiles’.

Finally, and for maximum bonus points, the liquid-like instrumentals are complimented by some truly beautiful vocal work, smooth and emotional.

Sterling effort. Eagerly awaiting round 2.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You wish the alienated frostiness of The Knife was welded to a Soul vocal package. Odd as that seems.
