Jim Kerr – Lostboy! A.K.A

NAME: Jim Kerr
ALBUM: Lostboy! A.K.A
YEAR: 2010 (May 16th)
LABEL: earMUSIC
RATING: 2/5

LOCATION: Glasgow, Scotland

LINE UP: Jim Kerr (vocals)

WHAT’S THE STORY?: All those years away, and you’d have thought big Jim Kerr would write like a man possessed, eager to prove to an ever-changing and cruel world that he’s more than a one-trick pony, and attest that he can only deliver the goods with Simple Minds. The legendary Scot pop-rocker disappoints in spectacular fashion, and can only graft old SM riffs and stylings to get any sort of listenable gumph out of this fatuous and unnecessary gumbo disc. At it’s best, ‘Lostboy! A.K.A’ rings of SM and, oddly, David Bowie at his most arch ‘Low’ moments. But somehow Kerr sounds disconnected from these songs, his new opus; is it his delivery? Or is he just paying the bills? Only big Jim knows. There is no energy, enthusiasm or statement of intent here. Having ranted all that bijou shock, I will admit to a quick wiggle to the VERY Simple Minds-y ‘Bulletproof Heart’ and the title track ‘Lostboy’.

SOUNDS LIKE: Simple Minds, and nothing else. Also, a quick aside to earMUSIC – sending out a promo copy for review, with “lowered volume short section(s)” to “protect the music of…artists” is incredibly arrogant – it’s only Jim fucking Kerr. Get over yourselves.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF YOU LIKE: Simple Minds, and nothing else.
