k-os – YES!

NAME: k-os
YEAR: 2010 (May 3rd)
LABEL: Universal Can/Zoom

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Magnificent hip-hopper demands more attention

LOCATION: Toronto, Canada

LINE UP: k-os (vocals, most instruments, production), with numerous guests

WHAT’S THE STORY?: This will be the Canadian’s fourth album, but he manages to make it sound like an excitable debut; everything is here, from the sunny ‘4,3,2,1’ to the classic rock of ‘Uptown Girl’. The underlying menace of the opening tracks blossoms into fun, invention and imagination for the rest of the album that just keeps giving, like a Christmas puppy that coughs up delicious sweeties. The single ‘I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman’ excellently samples Phantom Planet’s ‘California’ without relying on its melodic catchiness, while standout track ‘FUN!’ is just f***ing awesome with it’s big guitars, sweeping strings and tight drums. ‘YES!’ is absolutely packed with gems, and you should be ashamed of yourself if you miss it.

SOUNDS LIKE: Kanye West when he was good. K-os is an artist at his most confident, and this album is without doubt his best yet.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF YOU LIKE: albums packed with well-executed ideas, great beats, incisive lyrics and astute production.
