WHAT’S THE STORY?: Kaki King – Junior

From her early days as a pioneering solo acoustic player, Kaki King has been developing and honing her talent. She has added new instruments to her sound, and as well as the distinctive acoustic sound that first bought her to prominence, she has added keyboards, lap steel guitar, drums, and a light, but effective voice to her sound. On Junior, she still uses obscure names for many of her more esoteric pieces, many of which sound like work for soundtracks, whilst a certain punk spirit has crept into some her songs, such as opening track ‘The Betrayer’. The touching ballad ‘Everything has an end, even sadness’ sounds like it comes from an Indie film soundtrack, with its intricate guitar figure, gentle bass and drums, and soft horn parts. ‘Falling Day’ is a song that the Smiths could have written, whilst the closing ballad ‘Sunnyside’ is an affecting tale of lost love, and growing up, but which would have an eighteen certificate for its language. There is something for fans of fine music here, and shows a new maturity and sound to this ever developing and prolific musician and composer.

SOUNDS LIKE: The Smiths, high quality punk, Michael Hedges, Preston Reed etc

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: you like music that is out of the ordinary.
