Kirsty Almeida – Spider

NAME: Kirsty Almeida
SINGLE: Spider
DATE: 14June2010

LABEL: Decca Records

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Duffy, but much less miserable

LOCATION: Manchester

LINE UP: Just the good lady herself

WHAT’S THE STORY?: “Spider” taken from forthcoming album “Pure Blue Green” is four and a half minutes of sheer jazzy empowerment with a delicate hint of the blues. The track tells an interesting story but this may well be the beginning of Almeida’s story, comparisons to now industry veterans Amy Winehouse and Katie Melua wouldn’t be far-fetched, however Almeida offers something a little different, a calm confidence in her voice grabs the attention almost instantly whilst a powerful chorus springs the element of surprise, just try and keep your head still, an impossible task I promise. A short jazz solo adds class to an already elegant song after which we welcome back wonderfully soulful vocals in preparation for a big finish. An utterly fearless effort from one for the future. Monday September 13th expect a debut album to remember.

SOUNDS LIKE: John Legend, Duffy, Laura Izibor.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: you’re an independent woman with fire in your belly
