Langhorne Slim – Be Set Free

NAME: Langhorne Slim
ALBUM: Be Set Free
YEAR: 2010 (June 7th)
LABEL: Kemado
RATING: 4/5

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Buy the man a whiskey!

LOCATION: Oregon, USA

LINE UP: Langhorne Slim (vocals/guitar) / Jeff Ratner (bass) / Malachi DeLorenzo (drums) / Chris Funk (various/production)

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Buy the man a whiskey… but in a proper pub. One where you can lick the wallpaper and get tones of cigarettes, old ales, life. Not O’NeillsTM. Because although many of the songs here have that Irish twinge, they’re authentic in way that the sham-mock Irish chain of disappointment will never know. Masterful production really lends an air of professionalism to the jagged up-all-night vibes of ‘Back To The Wild’, ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Yer Wrong’, all of which make you want to crack open a bottle of Wild Turkey and celebrate Tuesday. There’s also a lil’ something-something for your softer side, and Slim’s aching heart really gets through on ‘I Love You, But Goodbye’ and ‘Land Of Dreams’. But wait, I hear you think (I CAN HEAR YOU THINK), these song titles are atrocious! And you’d be right! But never judge a book by it’s cover, unless it’s the Twilight trilogy. Another thing you may notice if you get the disc is that Slim has more than a touch of James Blunt with his inflections and vocal delivery. But wait, there’s more to it than that; there is genuine emotion here, real songs that’ll tug the heartstrings. With his sometimes fragile vocals, Slim delivers soulful songs that if Blunt had the same tunes, we wouldn’t snigger at him and his name wouldn’t have become a derogatory term (rhyming slang apart).

SOUNDS LIKE: the upbeat numbers were tons of fun to make, and the more introspective moments were carefully considered and well executed without becoming schmaltzy. A treat for you and your mum.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF YOU LIKE: drinking alone, and wouldn’t have it any other way.
