Leni Ward – Opening Doors

NAME: Leni Ward
SINGLE: Opening Doors
DATE: 2August2010

LABEL: The Library Recordings

RATING: 4/5

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Thank the lord for breakups.

LOCATION: Derby

LINE UP: Leni Ward

WHAT’S THE STORY?: There is no shortage of quirky females lamenting lost loves in their regional accents in British music at the moment; However Leni Ward is not one of them. There’s no “it’s not fair, you’re dead proper mean” or “golly gosh you were sick on my trainers” here. ‘Opening Doors’ is an uplifting, ethereal record that just happens to be about a breakup. “I’m going outside for the very first time in seven years without your hand in mine” Purrs Leni, and in no way does she make this prospect sound like a depressing one!

SOUNDS LIKE: Debbie Harry’s vocals, with Regina Spektor quirkiness and twinkly electronic beats that The Guillemots would be proud of.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You need a refreshing eloquent change from the current first ladies of British pop.
