Miike Snow – The Rabbit

NAME: Miike Snow
SINGLE: The Rabbit
DATE: 6July2010

LABEL: Columbia

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Good parts equal mediocre sum.

LINE UP: Andrew Wyatt, Christian Karlsson, Pontus Winnberg

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Experienced Swedish band, whose members have a successful history as song writers and producers for the pop industry. Having gone rogue(ish), they’re mixing up their own stuff for now. This latest offering is in support of their 2010 UK/USA tour.

SOUNDS LIKE: Essentially, what you get here is three mixes for the price of one: Track one is the radio mix, Track two cuts out the vocals entirely for an instrumental affair, while Track three is the ‘as-is’ on the album, which mutes the backing and brings the vocals into greater prominence. A handsome ‘Pick ‘n’ mix’ approach to music production I really could have gone for on the recent Anathema album.

The album mix is probably the best of the three and it’s here you can really feel the band’s experience comes to the fore: This is a professional, slick, pop package, with a grimy baseline and enough electronic beeps and piano interludes to keep the indie kids and critics entertained. Paradoxically, this experience is also what lets them down – at times their work sounds manufactured and plastic-like (the underlying beat even sounds faintly, but uncannily like Katy Perry’s ‘I Kissed a Girl’) and this doesn’t sit well with some of the juicer experimental stuff, until you’re left with what is, unfortunately, just another bland footnote in pop history.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF: You have dire need for standard pop with a slight euro-indie lilt. You like dvd-esque control over your music.
