Mirrorkicks – Mirrorkicks

NAME: Mirrorkicks
ALBUM: Mirrorkicks
YEAR: 2010 (April 19th)
LABEL: Fruit Pie Records

FIVE WORD REVIEW: Nonsensical album saved by finale.

LINE UP: Gerard De Waal (bass/backing vocals) / Anil Kamalagharan (lead vocals/backing vocals/quitars/synthesizers) / Edwin Pereira (guitars/lead vocals/backing vocals) / Ingmar Kamalagharan (drums/percussion/piano/synthesizers/backing vocals)

WHAT’S THE STORY?: Inexplicably popular four-piece return with a ten song album, which is unfortunately nine songs too long. With moments of solid musicianship on ‘Anything’ and some lovely guitar work on ‘Podium’, the album descends into lyrically confused and musically dull droning; throwaway fillers such as ‘Be Allowed’, ‘Too Slow’ and ‘Turning Up’ are barely listenable. The more energetic songs like ‘On TV’ and ‘Lego’ are accessible, but the softer ones are incredibly tough to get into, being repetitive and not throwing any real surprises into the mix. The one enjoyable song, ‘You’, is full of huge riffs and has a wonderful energy about it, which is sadly missing from the previous nine tracks and saves the disc from being a complete waste of time. A thankfully short album.

SOUNDS LIKE: a band that has no idea what they are trying to convey.

YOU’LL LIKE THIS IF YOU LIKE: plodding, dreary, MOR indie.
